What are the possible consequences of terminating pregnancy?

Abortion, especially when terminating the first pregnancy, can have a negative impact on a woman's physical health and her mental state.

Possible consequences for a woman's physical health:

  • infection, uterine piercing, bleeding, blood poisoning, death

  • Infertility;

  • the risk of breast cancer at an older age;

  • premature birth or miscarriage during the next pregnancy.

According to studies conducted in Lithuania, it has been established that the main and first risk factor for premature birth is most often indicated as the termination of previous pregnancy.

A well-documented study on the consequences of abortions performed for up to 12 weeks in a vacuum manner has been published at Charles University in Prague. Inflammatory processes were recorded in 5% of patients, and such serious complications as infertility and ectopic pregnancy, were recorded in 20-30% of women, especially those who waited and terminated the pregnancy for the first time. Weakening of the cervical muscles leads to miscarriage in 30-40% of all women. The rigidity of the cervical opening, the adhesion of the placenta, the overgrowth of the placenta, and the atony of the uterus also increase.

Artificial abortion increases the likelihood of breast cancer by 30%, if a woman has not given birth – by 50%

Different women experience the termination of pregnancy differently. Sometimes it can be heard that after an abortion, some of them experience relief due to the resolution of an unwanted situation, but relief can be an initial, superficial reaction. Later, after a shorter or longer period of time, women can survive a lot of negative emotions associated with the abortion they have experienced.

Women who have had an abortion can survive:

  • Guilty of an unsaved child

  • Anger towards herself and the people who pushed her to make such a decision

  • Non-forgiveness

  • Shame for such an act

  • The collapse of relationships

  • Feelings of loneliness

  • Self-devaluation, feel not worthy of a happy life

  • Insomnia and nightmares

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Eating disorders

  • Propensity to intoxicate with stimulants or sedatives

  • Emotional insensitivity to the surrounding environment

  • Changing intimate life by avoiding or feverishly searching for sexual intercourse

  • Lifestyle changes in the face of unemployment or workaholism

  • Excessive concern for other available children

  • Repetitive abortion experiences

  • Annual syndrome, when a woman's emotional state can significantly deteriorate every year at the time of abortion or the approximate date of birth of the child

  • Suicidal thoughts may arise

Abortion can also contribute to a woman's subsequent mental health disorders and psychosomatic symptoms: blood pressure disorders, unclear headaches, abdominal pains, etc.

From a psychological point of view, abortion is a loss. Some women experience this loss more easily, others more difficult, but the experience of this loss is sometimes complicated, because grief remains nameless and faceless - a woman never sees her child, as a result of which he remains unrealistic, and his death is as if invisible. However, this loss can be felt for a very long time and leave consequences not only in the emotional world of a woman, but also mess up other areas of life, for example, cause difficulties in relations with a man or friend, complicate further sexual relations. The consequences of abortion can also be felt when waiting and raising children born later.

Scientific studies show that it is not uncommon for mental health disorders to develop after an abortion, and the risk of suicide increases several times. A study in Finland found that women who had an abortion were six times more likely to be suicidal than those who chose to give birth.
